Botox & Dysport

As we age, the cellular changes that occur in our skin begin to accelerate, resulting in our skin losing a little bit more of its firmness and elasticity with each passing year. This loss is mostly due to the depletion of collagen, the protein responsible for skin’s elasticity; however, lifestyle and environmental factors, such as stress, climate, and smoking, can also contribute to the occurrence of wrinkles.

Thankfully, there are several options available that are proven to decrease wrinkles and provide a smoother, more youthful appearance. Injectable fillers, such as BOTOX and Dysport, are used to fill lines and creases or add fullness to the lips and cheeks.

BOTOX is a purified protein toxin that, when injected into the skin, restores a youthful appearance. It is a widely known and popular cosmetic solution because it is known to be safe, quick, effective, and easy, with minimal discomfort. BOTOX works because the facial muscles that cause the wrinkles relax after being temporarily paralyzed by the injectable solution. The procedure can take just minutes and results typically last three to four months.

After the procedure, patients can immediately resume their normal activities. Some minor pain, swelling, or bruising at or around the injection site may occur, but it is usually minimal and resolves quickly.

Like BOTOX, Dysport uses the same purified protein toxin to eliminate or minimize lines and wrinkles to restore a youthful appearance to the skin. Although near identical in structure and function, there are a few differences. Dysport is more diluted than BOTOX, which results in an increased dosage level. Dysport can also extend its solution further from a single injection site, making it beneficial when treating a larger area, such as the forehead. It performs best in areas with thinner facial muscles, such as around the eyes, and not as well in areas with thicker facial muscles, such as around the mouth.

Since a single Dysport injection can spread out further, patients typically require fewer injections than with BOTOX. Although the results between BOTOX and Dysport are very similar, the decision between the two is typically a matter of individual preference.
